High Tech Ideas on Main St.- Design Thinking & Lean for the Small Business

The videos below are the screencast version of a talk I recently did for the SC Chamber of Commerce. Our goal was to present a set of ideas from high tech that were applicable to any small business. Using The Penny Ice Creamery as a case study, that’s exactly what we did. The talk has three parts:

1. Ideas from High Tech for the Small Business
This portion of the talk describes leading ideas from high tech. If you’ve already seen this module, the version below is pretty similar- I’d skip it but check out the last two.

2. High Tech Ideas at The Penny
This portion of the talk shows how The Penny, a recently successful small business, applied the best practices described above.

3. Regional Advantage: SC
This last module describes the regional advantages of Santa Cruz County (California) for the artisinal foods industry, using Michael Porter’s ‘The Competitive Advantage of Nations’ for foundation concepts.

Feedback very welcome- thanks.

Part 1: Ideas from High Tech for the Small Business

The videos below cover the first segment of a talk I’ve been doing- Much Ado about Something. It covers what I think are the top ideas in:

Ideation
Organization
Planning
and
Development.

If you’ve already watched ‘Much Ado About Something’ I’d skip to module #2 below.

Part 2: High Tech Ideas at The Penny

This part of the talk applies the ideas above to The Penny, a runaway success in the artisinal ice cream space.

Part 3: Regional Advantage- SC

This portion of the talk describes how SC county provides unique regional advantages to the artisinal food industry. This is very much part of The Penny’s story.
